Alltech’s Lexington Brewing & Distilling Company – Distilling and brewing with passion

Alltech is a global company operating in the animal health and nutrition industry. With more than 2,650 employees in 128 countries, the company has developed a strong regional presence in Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In 1999, Alltech from the heart of Kentucky entered the drinks industry, initially with beer and then with spirits such as Bourbon and Malt Whisky. A carefully devised visitor centre is located close to the brewery and distillery and visitors can enjoy guided tours.

Alltech founder Dr. Pearse Lyons comes from Ireland and is a master of his craft. Five generations have been involved with whisky making in his home town. He says of the Bourbon: “The character of the Bourbon is closely linked to the water in the city of Lexington. This is why we named it after the river, Town Branch.” The ‘Pearse Lyons Reserve’ is a real highlight following numerous years of experimentation. This is the first Malt Whisky to be produced in Kentucky since 1919. The small yet refined product range is completed with a homage to Irish Coffee by the name of ‘Bluegrass Sundown’ which is made from coffee, sugar and Bourbon.

The distiller’s passion has already been suitably rewarded: the traditional Kentucky Distillers Association decided to expand its circle of distillery craftsmanship for the first time since it was founded in 1880 and invited Alltech to become a member.

The company also scored success at the World Spirits Award with gold for the Town Branch Bourbon and Pearse Lyons Reserve.

Roberto Gulino has a passion for experimentation and is the founder of La Bodega, a modern cocktail bar in Cosenza, where he has revolutionised the drinking culture. There, night after night, he conveys his beverage philosophy to his guests, bringing the classics of mixology back into focus with just a few aromatic details and refining them with typical Mediterranean flavours. Each of his cocktails is an attractive and exciting sensory experience. “I just like mixing, because it’s a synthesis of my world, my passions. It reminds me of my father, of our surname, of Gulliver and his travels. Perhaps this gave rise to the desire to travel around my country and the world, to learn from affinities and differences. I distil, I make liqueurs and I compose cocktails, I am an entrepreneur, but also a barman. I try to convey emotions that glide over the lips, occupy the palate and then burn in the chest. To appreciate a liqueur, a cocktail or a distillate means to indulge in the intoxication of the moment and forget the roar and emptiness of the surroundings as the ice clinks in the glass. To open a bottle is to prepare for the joy of sharing, of sinking preconceptions and of expanding knowledge. Family of Hounds – Sought and found

Andrea Frigerio and his English wife, Lina, live in Monaco with their two dogs, Spot and Magda, two wonderful additions to the family. Since they started taking the two for walks in town, they have made many new friends. Andrea and Lina used to be red wine drinkers, who spent their holidays in the wine hills of Italy and France. It was only in 2013, while visiting a country estate in England, that they discovered their love for a good G & T. This developed into a passion, and their discussions soon revolved around what it would be like to create their own gin.

They tasted intensively, discarded aromas they didn’t like, and extracted the aromas they did. Together with the master distiller in an old distillery in Piedmont, they created their recipe for the gin: juniper, lemon and orange peel, pink grapefruit, lavender, thyme, cardamom, ginger and coriander. The first three ingredients come from Italy, the rest from Asia. “The juniper is really loud, like a brightly lit disco floor, and the other botanicals dance around it. Together, they are like a lively, attention-seeking dog that can’t sit still.”

In the future, they are looking to establish a small family of spirits, from gin to vodka and from grappa to vermouth – unmistakable in taste, but accessible to everyone. The core of the philosophy is going out with good friends, enjoying a good meal and even better spirits. The first step has already been taken …
